Veil of Shadows: It’s never too late for a prologue

Veil of Shadows Series

You know this story. The one where the girl thinks she’s nothing but an insignificant human. The one where the guy is brimming with secrets and truth. Together, chaos erupts.

You’ve probably heard, their union is forbidden. And the only reason might be because they hurt each other even though they are desperately in love.

You might not have heard it told this way because the granddaughter of Lucifer and son of an Archangel can only trigger pandemonium.

Worldbuilding:

Heaven and Hell have always been at war. Some eras it slowed to a tolerable trickle–a time some might consider peaceful. Other times, they battled continuously in a never ending desire for souls.

Souls were a currency, a bargaining chip in Babylon where archaic rules were upheld. Souls brought power to a realm or a kingdom. The Seven Kingdoms of Heaven desired more and more power while the realm of Hell was overflowing. The Earthen plane was a neutral place, God’s land, they say. But God hasn’t been seen in a long time.

The soul trade:

Every individual who dies on the Earthen plane immediately went to Hell for sorting. This was the natural order of things. Newly dead souls repented at a Safe House and the Deacons decided their final resting place after giving them a chance to repent. The Deacons controlled the transfer of souls and the balance of power–most of the time. The Deacons helped keep creatures away from the Earthen plane. But, many times, Angels and Demons broke through the Veil. Deacons had to focus on the greatest threats and choose their battles wisely. They were few, too few to manage the souls who trickled into Hell each day, so plenty of mild chaos reached the Earthen plane. It slowed after the destruction of Hell’s portals during the Fast- Zombie War.

The worst chaos occurred when royalty broke through. An Archangel or the Queen of Hell or a King of Heaven brought the most chaos, causing the Veil between realms to thin and the dead to walk and the souls to become stuck on the Earthen plane. The Deacons had to bring them back to their rightful plane and they did so by hiring out force.

Some souls were worth more than others and were desired, as they would bring great power.

Blood:

Angels and Demons drink blood like Vampires. It brings them power. Fresh blood makes them strong, bagged blood keeps them sated, blood from the walking dead makes them viciously unwell.

Couples can blood bond by drinking each other’s blood. This results in a deep soul bond and blood lust that is difficult to control. The only way to break a blood bond is to drain all the blood from each other or death.
