Rue jolted upright in her bed, a strangled gasp escaping her lips. Her heart was pounding violently, her breaths shallow as the remnants of a vision lingered in her mind. Sweat beaded her skin and soaked her shirt as she clawed at the damp sheets, trying to ground herself.
“Rue,” Dacre’s steady voice cut through her panic. “What’s wrong?” He was touching her shoulder then her neck, pressing his thumbs against her jaw and tracing light circles. “Wake up.” He turned her to face him. “Wake up, princess. Come back to me.”
